Im Alter von 15 Jahren begann Stefan Wagner (geb. 1965), Gitarre zu spielen und entdeckte den Jazz über die Platten „Electric Guitarist“ von John McLaughlin, „Maiden Voyage“ von Herbie Hancock und einem Livemitschnitt von John Coltrane aus dem Jahr 1961. Sein Musikstudium am Wiener Franz Schubert Konservatorium schloss er 1989 mit dem Konzertdiplom ab.
1984 gründete der Gitarrist erstmals die „Stefan Wagner Group“, mit der er bis Anfang der 90er Jahre regelmäßig in Wiener Clubs auftrat. Das Repertoire der Band bestand schon damals aus eigenen Kompositionen, aber auch aus ausgesuchten Stücken von Musikern wie John Scofield, Mike Stern, George Benson, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock oder Miles Davis.
Nach einer mehrjährigen Pause formierte Stefan Wagner im Jahr 1997 seine Band neu, und zwar mit dem Ziel, ausschließlich eigene Kompositionen zu spielen. Zunächst absolvierte die „Stefan Wagner Group“ zahlreiche Auftritte vor allem in Wien und Umgebung, darunter waren zwei Konzerte als Vorgruppe des Schlagzeugers Simon Phillips sowie drei Auftritte im Rahmen des Wiener Donauinselfests, der größten Open – Air – Veranstaltung Europas.
Im November 2004 nahm die “Stefan Wagner Group” ihre erste CD “Listen Well” auf, drei Jahre erschien das 2. Album „The Long Walk“. Beide CDs bewirkten eine umfangreiche Konzerttätigkeit in ganz Mitteleuropa mit Auftritten in den Wiener Jazzclubs „Porgy & Bess“, „Joe Zawinul’s Birdland“ und „Jazzland“, weiters u.a. im Jazzclub „Reduta“ in Prag, im „BP“ von Bosko Petrovic in Zagreb, im Jazzclub „Unterfahrt“ in München sowie in zahlreichen weiteren Jazzclubs in Österreich, Deutschland und in der Schweiz. Außerdem gastierte die Band bei mehreren Festivals, z.B. u.a. im Rahmen der Jazzfestivals in Wien und Wiesen, bei den Ludwigsburger Jazztagen sowie den Bratislava Jazz Days. 2012 folgte die dritte CD „Heart Blues“, die weniger swingend ist, aber dafür mehr von Latin und Fusion geprägt ist als es ihre beiden Vorgänger waren. Auch diese CD wurde mehrmals live präsentiert, z.B. im Jazzland, im Jazzclub Melk, in Eisenach (D) sowie im Rahmen des Kultursommers Güssing.
Zurzeit (Herbst 2018) hat Stefan Wagner drei Bands parallel laufen, mit denen er regelmäßig im Raum Wien auftritt:
1. „Soundstairs“, eine Band, die Stefan Wagner im Jahr 2016 gemeinsam mit der Sängerin Eve Nord (Sabine Müller-Vohnout) gegründet hat. Das Repertoire von „Soundstairs“ besteht vor allem aus Vocalsongs, die von Pop, Funk und Latin beeinflusst sind und die Stefan Wagner in den letzten Jahren geschrieben hat. Dazu kommen einige instrumentale Latin & Fusionstücke, die auf der CD „Heart Blues“ veröffentlicht wurden.

2. Das „Stefan Wagner – Georg Barnert Oktett“: Georg Barnert ist Saxophonist, Komponist und Arrangeur, mit ihm gemeinsam leitet Stefan Wagner diese Band. Das ebenfalls 2016 gegründete Oktett spielt Kompositionen beider Bandleader, die Georg Barnert für die Besetzung 2 Saxophone, Trompete, Posaune + Rhythmusgruppe arrangiert hat.

3. Die „Stefan Wagner Group“, mit der er in Quartett-, Quintett und manchmal auch Sextettbesetzung eine Auswahl seiner jazzigen Kompositionen sowie auch ausgewählte Jazzstandards spielt.

Abseits seiner eigenen Bands spielte Stefan Wagner in der Vergangenheit u.a. noch in der „Vienna Jazz Formation” des Saxophonisten Hannes Meixner, als Gast im Trio des Hammond Organisten T. C. Pfeiler, Soul- und Jazzklassiker mit der Formation „Jazz@BWM“ sowie Duokonzerte mit der österreichischen Saxophonlegende Hans Salomon.
Stefan Wagner started to play guitar at the age of 15 and came into jazz when listening to the records “Electric Guitarist” by John McLauglin, “Maiden Vouyage” by Herbie Hancock and a live recording of John Coltrane from the year 1961. In 1989 he finished his music studies on the “Franz Schubert Conservatory” in Vienna with a concert degree.
In 1984, the guitarist founded the “Stefan Wagner Group” for the first time and played shows in Viennese Jazz clubs regularly until the beginning of the 1990ies. The repertoire of the band consisted of originals, but also of selected pieces written by musicians like John Scofield, Mike Stern, George Benson, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock or Miles Davis.
After a break of several years, Stefan Wagner re-established his group in 1997 with the goal to play only his own compositions. During the first years the “Stefan Wagner Group” had numerous appearances mostly in Vienna and the surrounding area, among them were two shows as a support act of the drummer Simon Phillips (in Vienna and Graz) and three shows at the Vienna “Donauinselfest” (Danube – island festival), the largest open air festival in Europe.
In November 2004 the “Stefan Wagner Group” recorded its first CD “Listen Well”, the 2nd CD “The Long Walk” was released three years later. Both CDs effected numerous concerts all over Central Europe, for example in Vienna at „Porgy & Bess“, “Joe Zawinul’s Birdland“ and “Jazzland”, but also among others at the Jazz club „Reduta“ in Prague, at Bosko Petrovic’s club “BP” in Zagreb and at the “Unterfahrt” in Munich as well as in many other jazz clubs in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The band played also at numerous festivals like the Jazzfestivals Vienna and Wiesen and the “Jazzdays” in Ludwigsburg and Bratislava. In 2012, the third CD “Heart Blues” followed. This album is less swinging, but more influenced by Latin & Fusion than the two CD’s before. It was presented live several times, for example at Jazzland/Vienna, at Jazzclub Melk, at Eisenach (Germany) and at the Festival “Kultursommer Güssing”.
At the time (fall 2018), Stefan Wagner has three bands running:
1. “Soundstairs”: Stefan Wagner has founded this band in 2016 together with the singer Eve Nord (Sabine Müller-Vohnout). The repertoire of “Soundstairs” consists primarily of vocal songs, influenced by Pop, Funk and Latin and written by Stefan Wagner during the last years. In addition there are some instrumental Latin & Fusion pieces released on the CD “Heart Blues”.

2. “Stefan Wagner – Georg Barnert Octet”: Georg Barnert plays saxophone, he’s also composer and arranger. Stefan Wagner leads this band together with him. The octet (founded also 2016) plays compositions by both of them which Georg Barnert has arranged for this setting (2 saxes, trumpet, trombone, rhythm group).

3. “Stefan Wagner Group”. With this band, a quartet, quintet or sometimes sextet, the guitarist plays a selection of his jazz compositions and some standards.
